If it's backfiring when you take your foot off the gas pedal or when you shut it off, like a gunshot, it's going to be the diverter valve for the A.I.R. (smog pump) system. The stalling is probably the pressure switch on the power steering system. It's supposed to speed up the engine in certain situations when you turn the steering wheel to prevent stalling do to the added load of the power steering pump working harder. HTH. -Jim
