Gear shifter cable on a 96 Chevy Cavalier

I have a 96 Chevy Cavalier the
gear shifter cable under the hood
where the rubber part snaps onto
the metal part keeps popping off
is there any way or anything I can
do to make the car start in Drive?

Thank you Jim I was hoping that there was a way around it because the gear shifter cable is worn out but I was hoping I can get around that long enough to get enough money to get another one. Thank you very much I do appreciate your response
