My 1994 buick roadmaster cuts off when I put the radiator cap on

How long does it take to cut off? Could the car be overheating? Is the system pressurizing and pushing water (coolant) into somewhere and causing the engine to stall? (like soaking the distributer or some other wiring) Are you noticing coolant loss?
