Best Oil for Car that had Dirty Engine.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I bought a 2006 Toyota Matrix this year, with 68000KM On it. When I had it brought into the shop, they called me back to come see the Oil Gastet under the hood which was totally covered with sludge baked on. I paid almost $1500 for a Hot Oil Flush, and for them to clean it out, as well as a few other things. They put in Castrol Edge Synthetic after, and told me to come back in a month for another oil change.

Which oil should I go with this time? I'm considering Valvoline/Castrol or PennZoil Synthetics. Also, is there any other additivies I should think about adding? Right now I am considering Pennzoil Ultra or Platnum as preferred. Just want to know the best course of action with this dirty engine, that got cleaned in the pan and gasket.... Thanks

This is what I had to find out after the vehicle inspection.

You should be careful about changing brands, since they are not compatible due to the variation in additives each contains. As it is, you have begun a treatment plan which may lead to other symptomatic issues such as burning oil between changes. I recommend that you return to the garage and let them continue with their treatment plan. You should not add anything else to your oil. Think of your situation as going to a doctor and then deciding on your own to add your own medicine to what he has prescribed. Changing your oil once per month is a good idea. Synthetic oil is better and worth the difference in price.

Thanks both of you. We took the car in for a Oil Change today for the first time since May 1 today, and the oil was completely black. We ended up using synthetic SynPower Oil, instead of the Castrol Edge ww had in before. Should we still change the Synthetic Oil once every 30 to 45 days until it stops being black? They also changed the Transmission Fluid and Coolant, as the previous owner hadn't kept the vehicle up. Thanks

I have gotten some cars with turbos and had to change the oil after less than 1000 miles a few times till the oil was not black. I would keep using what the place used in the engine. Just changing the oil and the oil filter. I would also recommend getting a oil drain plug with a really good magnet on it. There are also magnets for the oil filter to use. This will help pull any metal shavings being pumped through and help stop some of the damage.
