2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L V8 Magnum

Asked by Feb 02, 2017 at 11:33 AM about the 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 2 Dr SLT Quad Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Need help. My truck won't start  and I've seen
some answers here on this forum but none of
them seem to be the possible answer I need. I've
replaced the ignition coil, alternator, and battery
myself and I'll admit that I'm not very mechanically
inclined but following the Hanes manual for my
truck I was able to replace both the ignition coil
and the alternator with no trouble, the is just
common sense. I need help diagnosing the
problem as my truck is my only means of
transportation to and from work other than the
bus.

Have you checked for any codes? If you don't have a code reader I suggest you get one and not a cheap version, get one that can do live data scanning. But for right now do the Chrysler flashouts, the procedure and what the codes mean should be in the manual you now have. If you still have problems then come on back.

I have codes but they're for the transmission control module and governor solenoid in the transmission.

OK, then you need to find out if it is spark or fuel related,, spray somw starter fluid in the intake and crank it, it it fires and runs just briefly then it is fuel, if not then it is spark. Most common failure for fuel is the fuel pump, so check for pressure and flow, the most common things for spark is cam and crank sensors, unfortunately you need a lab scope or an magnetic probe for a multimeter to test these, or you could do like so many people do and just replace them. I'll definitely give that a try. That seems like the most common answer from I've read here on the forum.

Will it start at all? Than die and not start? I had a problem similar to yours. Turned out to be a temperature sensor located near the thermostat.
