Humming vibration ,

Asked by GuruDR4BK Sep 14, 2017 at 02:08 PM about the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

As I bring my 2001 chevy suburban up to
speed I'm getting a humming vibration that
is continuous and then stops , then starts
again and then stops for a few seconds. Air
is off, but is in working condition otherwise .
Is it possible the power steering pump is
cycling on and off.

Is it from the front or back? Like rear chunk rear end, or axle bearings or is it from the front wheel bearings, or engine area or front drive shaft output bearing, just need more info on where it comes from. Power steering can hum, mostly when turning at slower speeds when real bad, but does it sound like a belt or belt tensioner/puller/idler pulley.

The drive shafts (3 of them, Main one to rear and one to each front wheel unless it has a straight axle on the front) can wear out and need new ones, the part going into the trans or transfer case, can hum at first then to a roar and if the rear end or transfer case is low on gear oil may hum then roar as it goes dry then it goes bad and can break or lock up.

It's the muffler on the passenger side. When the engine is running in gear, with brake on, I push against the muffler and noise goes away. Could be muffler or piping just barely rubbing.
