Yesterday the power steering in my 2001 surburban quit working. There are no leaks and it is full of fluid. I think the pump is bad. Does that sound correct or is there something else I should check?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday the power steering in my 2001 surburban quit working.  I could turn
the wheel and drive the 4 miles to home but it took all of my strength. There are
no leaks and it is full of fluid.  I think the pump is bad.  Does that sound correct
or is there something else I should check?

I had exactly the same problem, there is filth in the pump it self, not your fault. I opened the pump and cleaned good, specially the iron ball that regulates power, Fan belt new, fluid new, butt had to take off the pump and open for cleaning. Only way. Let me know, Good Luck.

The pump needed replaced. When I took it out, the pulley just fell out. The pump shaft had broken so I am guessing the pump seized up. After a replacement it is working fine now. The hard part was getting the EVO actuator off the old pump because I was not sure how to take it off. Also, the pulley plull'er was difficult to remove and they install the pulley.
