what's causing vibration noise?

Asked by Jul 03, 2015 at 05:00 AM about the 2001 Honda CR-V LX AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Why does my CRV make a vibrating noise between 35 to 45 mph? Doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes it will be softer sounding, not loud. Other times it is really loud. To me it sounds toward the back. Others say sounds like it's coming from the front. There is also an entrance to a store I go to that is a steep incline and it makes the vibrating sound when I drive up it obviously at a creeping speed. Where ever it's coming from the sound is always the same place.

My guess is since you mentioned driving up a steep incline at low speed tells me it might be a loose heat shield. Crawl under the car when it is cold, and see if the heat shields on the catalytic convertors are loose or rusted off in spots. They tend to vibrate and make noise in the middle of the car and hard to pinpoint. It's a common issue. Easy fix is use a large hose clamp around the converter, I think a 6" works nice. Let us know what you find.
