When putting the heads back on the block, do I need to set the crankshaft first or is there another way.

all you have to do is get #1 piston up on compression stroke.their is a dot on timing gear make sure it is alinged with dot on cam gear.if this was not removed,just heads put back together get #1 piston up as stated put distrouber in with rotor button pointing to #1 crank and timeto spec.
