i WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE CHECK ENGINE AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS APPEARED WHAT CAUSED THIS

It could be a number of problems and should be looked at by a mechanic. It could be something as simple as the gas cap wasn't tight enough which triggered the check engine light, or it could be something more serious like the mechanical failure of your traction control system.

Sometime the traction control will be disabled when the car senses a problem with the ABS system. You could have a bad wheel/brake sensor.
