Recommended motor oil for oil change

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am doing an oil change on my 2002 Chevy Camaro 3.8L V6 and I
really am in need of finding out what recommended oil I should
replace it with. I heard people are recommending Mobil 1 synthetic
blend and I believe the oil that's in it is still conventional but high
mileage conventional by penzoil.  It has a bit over 140k miles on it and
I don't want to mess this beauty up at all. I'm looking to start putting in
alot of money into it but I want to be sure I'm on the right path by
starting here with it's oil change. I see there is an old performance oil
filter on it so I'm thinking I might need to replace that with a
performance filter as well I'm just scared to possibly mess it up by
putting on a not so good filter with the wrong motor oil although as
said before hand I am sure that there is high mileage conventional oil
in it but have done research and from that I've partially learned I can
go ahead and completely switch to a 50/50 synthetic blend oil. It's
just with 140k miles I don't know if I'm still able to and/or should?

Mobil1 is full synthetic and an excellent oil. I would use the proper grade (it is shown on the oil filler cap) in a name brand oil. Conventional, synthetic blend or full synthetic are oil excellent choices. Pick one and change it once a year or every 5,000 miles. A great place to get your Chevy serviced is at the Chevy dealership. They know their cars and what they are doing. Quick lube places are hit and miss. You oil question will get all sorts of answers, but stay with the oil grade that the manufacturer recommends and you can't go wrong.

Synthetic oil blends are not 50/50, they have very little synthetic in them but you don't need synthetic oil. Any name brand 5W/30 will do just fine.

The best filters have synthetic media which has nothing at all to do with synthetic oil. These filters filter out much finer particles. The Fram Ultra is a good choice.

Stay with the 5W/30 High Mileage, use the filter F_O_R recommended (or another name brand with the same or better filtering spec), and change both every 5000 miles or annually. Your Camaro will last a long time if you keep all the other main components up with the same level of care.

i used 5w-30 , 10w-30 , and sometimes a quart of 5w-40 on the 4.5 quart change. full synthetic is better. i just got by with a ordinary fram filter ( i wet it with some oil before install).
