i haven't used the front tank since i bought it a few months ago. when i tried it died so ive only been using the rear tank. is it from lack of use?

The switching valve is most likely the problem with fuel backup and may also be the problem with it not running on the front tank, if the valve won't switch all the way it can cause the return from the rear to feed into the front and also not turn on the fuel pump in the front tank when selected. But you may also have a bad fuel pump in the front tank. Hope this helps.
