Grinding noise when accelerating forward or in reverse?

After going down a gravel road, there is a metal
grinding noise coming from the front of my 2002
ford explorer sport trac. It happens when I'm
driving forward and backward. And gets louder as I
accelerate. It also has a 4x4 switch but, I haven't
tested to see if I hear it in 4x4.
