Replacing ignition lock cylinder 2003 chevy malibu

Asked by Guru95DYY1 Dec 27, 2020 at 08:01 PM about the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 chevy malibu, I had
replaced the original ignition lock
a few months ago, now I lost my
only key I had to the new ignition.
Locksmith wants to charge me
over $100 to make a replacement
key by using my vin number, but If
I had already replaced the factory
issued ignition then how will that
work? Wouldn't it be cheaper just
to replace the ignition lock
cylinder again? And if I went that
route would I have to buy an
ignition lock cylinder with anti
theft? I'm so confused and dumb
when it comes to cars.  Single
mother of 4 so the cheapest
simplest option is what i am
looking for.. TIA

If the locksmith guarantees his work for $100 this is your best option. This time get 2 or 3 keys!

You are correct. Using the VIN to get your key code will not work in your situation because, as you said, the lock has been replaced once already. When you bought the replacement lock there should have been a tag or barcode that came with the new lock. This is the key code for the new lock. If you still have that the locksmith can use that information to make you a new key. This should cut the cost some. Either way I'd do as F_O_R said and pay the $100. Get two keys made and put the spare in a safe place. Hope that helps! Jim
