Malibu security light on after changing ignition and door cylinder

Asked by Jun 17, 2017 at 11:49 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu LT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2005 Chevy Malibu won't start and
security light came on (sometimes blinking,
sometimes solid).
I lost the key and had to replace the ignition
cylinder. But the light was still on, so we
replaced the door cylinder too. Still on. Tried
everything. Don't know what to do.

The system has to be reprogrammed to reconise the new parts, the dealer can do this and some locksmiths, but it is not something you can do on your own unless you have all the computer equipment needed.

Since you replaced the lock cylinder and key, like tennisshoes says, it has to go to the dealer, or locksmith to be reprogrammed.

I thought there were ways to reprogram it yourself?

Not on your Year of vehicle, some of the older rigs back in the early 90's could be done, but on most makes running OBD2 operating systems you need the Dealer to do it.

Is there a way to disable the anti theft or security system?

There is a way but it cost like $300 for this module to do it, and I'm not sure if a shop will do this, may have to put it in yourself, check this sight out... http://newrockies.com
