I have a 2004 chevy impala and the transmission shifts hard sometimes does this mean transmission is bad

Should stop in at a transmission shop for proper diagnosis.

Something is going on inside the transmission that's making the computer increase the transmission fluid pressure. You may have lost overdrive and torque converter clutch lock in. The hard shifting is a secondary symptom. If that's what is going on it's about a $1500 repair. As Rowefast said let a reputable transmission shop confirm this. HTH. -Jim
