Question type: Maintenance & Repair

initial problem - horrible sound and would only attempt to close and retract to fully open position.  16 hours later right side cable is frozen and roof doesn't  respond at all.

dealer solution - new sunroof needed estimated expense $2160.

after 3 1/2 years my $36,000 toyota doesn't cover a sunroof issue that has been so prevalent numerous TSB's have been issued.  what a racket!!!

That is a bummer. Many sunroofs now are sold as complete units, no replacement parts available per se, so I can totally believe that is the case.

Had the same problem with my '04 SR5...quote of $2,011. plus $40. for a useless estimate to replace right side cable, remove headliner etc (White River Toyota). Brought the car back to dealer that sold me the vehicle new (Irwin Toyota) and they did the job for $169. (remove headliner and clean/free up gunked up frozen cable/sunroof mechanisms). Toyota Motor Company even reimbursed me for 50% of the completed repairs...sweet deal all around for me. Toyota acted like LL Bean here with my malfunctioning sunroof (jambed in open position). Nice touch.
