Charging system failure

Asked by Shannonboal94 Oct 15, 2016 at 10:36 AM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2004 grand prix and this started about a
year ago it popped up charging system failure but
it only stayed on for a few seconds so I replaced
the alternator, 2nd one lasted up until 3ish weeks
ago, 3rd one went bad yesterday so I went to
Advanced auto parts and bought a brand new one
with lifetime warranty for 200 and it is still popping
up charging system failure and I also have a new
battery in my cat as well. My dad checked the
alternator and its pushing out about 14 volts. What
else could be causing it to pop up

Replacing the same part over and over is never a good substitute for proper diagnostics. Take it to a shop that specializes in electrical issues and find the actual problem. It's not likely something you will find on your own.

Try also checking the battery cable connections. I had to change out the ground cable at the fuse box inside the engine compartment. The cable was arching, which gave it a weak connection. It has ran fine for the most part now, but it still dies out from time to time.

It’s been a year. I’m guessing they’ve got it fixed by now. I doubt any more information will be forthcoming.

ive been haveing the same problem i have a 05 grand prix 3800 series 2 motor, i replaced alternator and put a brand new battery in it when the battery saver active and chargeing system failure light came on but still didnt fix it, but i have a good idea what it might be soo whoever is reading this listen up!, if your haveing the system failure light pop up and the car is chargeing correctly its the security charm alarm bullshit that u buy soo u can install a aftermarket radio in it, its really dumb why pontiac did that, just causes more problems like a ton of people is haveing but you buy the cheaper charm alarm systems i guarantee you will cause those problems because i had one, soo took it off and put factory cd player back in and it fixed it!
