Engine leaking fluid (Coolant?)

Asked by Joe May 04, 2023 at 08:02 PM about the 2005 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

3.4 L V6. Engine is leaking fluid from the front near cylinder 2
when running. It appears to be coolant, as it is not engine oil.
I have attached a photo, it is leaking from the seam.
Wondering what the technical term is for where it is leaking
from. And what is likely the fix required?

Have the cooling system pressure tested, from the pictures it could be a headgasket, or where the head bolt goes into the water jacket is not sealed anymore, the water pump or the hose that’s right there spraying coolant.

The bad news is that you have a damaged head gasket or cracked head. The good news is that the engine lasted almost twenty years before this happened; much better than average. The fix will likely cost half the value of the car, so who knows which way to go. If the car's otherwise in great, reliable condition, a fix might be best.
