Runs ragged in drive and sometimes dies.

2000 Merc Grand Marquis.
Replaced a leaking heater core
then manifold cracked. Put on a
new manifold and it ran great in
park. When we test drove, it
sputters (not like gas issue but
more like misfire) and if ypu step
on gas harder it would either
smooth out or die. Can restart
right away or after a minute or
so. We had idled in the drive til
the thermostat opened so I'd say
the engine was plenty warm
when we test drove it.
Wondering if this could be
another related problem like coil
packs, plugs, or injectors - or if it
could be totally unrelated like
fuel filter. Any ideas so we spend
the least money possible? NO
Codes btw. Couldn't be that easy

We reattached everything that came off but will double chwck the clamps etc. And yes the intake manifold. Will look into plugs and coils. I know the plugs were reasonable but the coils were 50+ each last time I looked (ug).
Yes, cleaned it really well with paper towels in the openings. New intake manifold came with gaskets pre-fab (nylon manifold). It was Dorman which I heard was decent brand. And thanks for that link. Got the coils and plugs ordered. Couldn't hurt even if it is something else ;)
LOL Thanks to Google and YouTube... I'm not afraid of getting dirt under the nails. Here's hoping the coils and plugs solve it.

My intuition says the manifold was not installed correctly, maybe mating surfaces were not scraped down smooth? Spraying some gas or cleaner around the edges while running would tell a story. I'd pull it, and re-install it if the spray makes any changes.

Hi Michelle, You probably fixed it by now, ha ha however, I had the very similar problem last fall on my Mercury 98 Marquis and it turned out to be that I had not shut my gas cap correctly (until it clicked). At least that is what the repairman told me and at any rate, he probably added something to the gas tank to take out the moisture from the very early morning air when the problem began. It worked just fine after that. Judith
Yes, it was the plugs. They were all burnt and one had a fair amount of oil inside. Glad I got that link. Not sure what happened to that post but it was definitely the fix.
