Here's the same problem with the same '05 Cherokee from five years ago. It mentions a few different scenarios - http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/Discussion-t15926_ds358215

There is a technical service bulletin out for this issue. Take it to a 5-star dealer and they will know what to do. The TSB says the light comes on when there are no faults found. The dealer will need to downlaod the new software for the Final Drive Control Module so the light stops coming on erroneously. Here is the TSB: http://www.wkjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk_2101406a.pdf

Wish I had known about the bulletin because I paid $150.00 to reprogram or update all of the firmware on my 2005 grand cherokee limited to stop the airbag light and the service 4wd system message to stop coming on. Now it will not go into 4wd low. Brings up the message to service 4wd system again. Hoping just an actuator? Make any since? Definitely scared of the newer jeeps with all of their new electronics because that and the starter on this one have been the major issues. Along with the constant alignments and the fact that I should just pour the gas on the ground because it doesn't stay in the tank for more than a day. Not complaining just in love but its killing me.
