My 2001 jeep grand cherokee laredo overheats when idle

Asked by Jasmine Feb 24, 2016 at 09:28 PM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So i recently bought a used 01 jeep gc laredo v8
engine 4x4 and i noticed that the vehicle starts to
overheat when idle but as soon as i start moving
again it goes back down to normal. Any ideas on
what it could be before i take it to the mechanic
and pay extra money??

check thermostat..enough coolant?? when you are driving its actually cold air that is cooling the engine through radiator..

Well i got the car on friday and my bf checked all the fluids n they were all topped off..and with a thermostat issue wouldnt the car overheat right away mine only starts to when im idle but goes back down when i start to move again.

it would take a while not right away..thermostat is cheap to fix..i would look into that if its not t-stat then you might need to bleed your system too or water pump is going too

Anytime I have had that issue it has always been the cooling fan. If the car is moving it's getting air movement but when idle the fan either doesn't blow or doesn't blow enough. Even of it looks like it's blowing, if it's belt driven it may need replacing.

So I found out what the problem is. It has a cracked radiator which is weird because i dont see any leaks but whatever and it needs a new thermostat and the lower radiator hose needs to be replaced. Thank you all for your responses!
