Rear lights don't come on anymore

Asked by semperfi085 Sep 19, 2009 at 01:59 PM about the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

At first I was having problems with the top brake light and the passenger side brake light not coming on.  Now the entire rear end electrical system seems to have failed (excluding the blinkers).  I know this car had alot of electrical problems, Where can i look to fix it?

i would check all the relays and fuses. than i would check the power to the lamps to see if theres any voltage. if not than use the meter to see of the lines are shorted out. are your back up lamps out too? another check would to see if the brake switch is functioning on the brake pedal arm. the switch could have gone bad. if your car has a trailer hitch power conector you could see if you have power to the trailer brake lights and that can eliminate some possibilities.

its a very common problem in the WJ's to have the rear brake lights stop working.. MOST of the time the problem is the connectors in the taillight housing.. if you pull off your taillight and pull out the bulb there will be 3 little copper flanges / tabs that are the connectors for the bulb. They seem to like to smash down and not connect properly.. Carefully pull them up so they will connect better and see if that fixes your problem.. just a suggestion
