Why is my jeep shutting off without warning?

Asked by SapoFoo Jul 30, 2012 at 08:12 PM about the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My jeep keeps shutting off on me with no warning. I'll be driving and out of nowhere, say at a red light it will die???
Sometimes it starts right back up and other times it takes like 10 min. I've heard it can be the computer ? Any
suggestions? I already took it to 3 shops, including jeep  Chrysler dodge of Tracy ca and all they did was charge me
a lot for changing parts that didn't need to be changed.

I would check when the truck dies using a timing light if you're getting spark through all the plug wires. If not, I would change the ignition module under the distributor cap. This might fix the problem.

I had the same problem with my 2001 jeep I found out it was the crank sensor. Jim

Hi i know its several year later but i had a similar thing my jeep would be sluggish to take off and judder at slow speeds then when sit at traffic lights it might just stall .. then start again ... Finally it stalled i managed to get it going then stalled while idling for 2 mins then wouldnt start and was like not getting any fuel to the engine ... after pumping accelerator it fired then stalled again.. I called the AA breakdown service the mechanic noticed their was a leak from an exhaust pipe that was recycling the exhaust gases (sorry im not technical) a valve was being pushed fully open so cutting off the fuel, all he did was remove the vacuum pipe to this valve and the car fired up and drove like beauty , better than it has every driven ... but i still have to replace the leak in the pipe..
