Yes, crankshaft sensor failure is very common on this engine, the 4.0 liter six. You may have noticed that the tachometer reading drops suddenly and back up while stalling. Scan for fault codes. It will be P0320.

It gave me this code p0340 so I replace it with a used one from my other 98 jeep ran good for 2 days then stalled out with the same code yesterday I was thinking on replacing the crankshaft sensor

If you got a code P0340, that's the camshaft position sensor. Replace it with a new one with a known reputation of good quality. It will be the best $40 you have spent recently. Don't waste your time and energy on generic and junk parts.

I am having a similar problem: the Jeep is a grand cherokee 2013 and the engine shuts down when I slow down or I advance slowly. After that I can always start it again immediately with no problems. I also experienced loss of power when accelerating a few times. There is no fault code, but it has been told me the engine shuts down because the car goes in recovery mode. Do you guys have any idea about what could be the problem here? Thanks!

If there's no fault codes, it may be a fuel problem. Start by replacing your fuel filter if it's more than 30K miles old. If that doesn't work, do a fuel pressure test. The fuel pressure regulator on that model >might< be built into the fuel filter...not sure. A vehicle that new, it's probably nothing serious...just annoying. Good Luck!

thanks for the answer Hornet_2497! the car has 43K miles but the pressure tests have revealed no problems.. looking around on the web I was thinking that maybe it could be a software fault or a TIPM problem.. I also found someone saying that some oil dropping from the air turbine on the swirl could cause its malfunctioning and make the system go into recovery mode.. unfortunately I have no competence to judge how much these factors could be relevant in my situation.. if you have any further input I really appreciate!

My 2016 Jeep Cherokee with only 26,000 miles just had it's engine replaced after turning off while I was driving for a 2nd time since purchased. I was advised the 2.4 engine it was equipped with, burns 2 to 3x's more oil even when matained with synthetic oil, serviced regularly as originally recommended and that the electronic oil warning indicator will not work either. Even after a new engine was installed they are still recommending I get my truck oil serviced at every 2500-3000 miles, unbelievable..

I would not want to bare the additional expense of getting the engine serviced that often. I think it would suffice to simply check the oil level during each gas fill up. The "engine turning off" might be a engine protection feature that shuts it down when low oil level is detected. This would be good for people who don't check their oil often enough and ruin the engine.
