Speedometer Stopped Working!

110

Asked by Chris Apr 29, 2017 at 06:23 PM about the 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Today my speedometer stopped working. Odometer is not advancing ether.
I checked all the fuses to see if any were blown but all seemed good. Next I
want to check the ground and speed sensor but I don't know where to start.
Where do I look for the speed sensor and what should I look for to
determine if it is working? Where are the ground wires leading to the
speedometer? I want to check but there are a ton of wires under the dash.
Any help would be appreciated.

The ABS light is not on. Only the check engine. I am trying to locate a ground attached to see if it is broken or corroded. Now my speedometer sensor is located on the drive side of my output shaft? It looks like there is two sensors attached there. Is it safe to just pull it out and look?

I fixed a quite an elusive problem on my 04 JGC in which the first symptom was the speedometer started jumping around; then the transmission started shifting erratic (sometimes not even getting out of first gear); then the cruise control started becoming erratic; then the radio and gauges; then the inside cabin lights not coming on or erratically operating, then the battery going dead for no reason; so after thinking that my 04 with approximately 200K on the odometer was just on it's last days, I sat down in my shop and thought, "this can't be just related to the transmission, since it involves more than the speedometer, cruise control and shifting"...it does have one common factor though and that is all those symptoms need good grounds to work accurately. I clean all the battery-to-body ground points every couple years just to avoid erratic electrical issues. However, there was one ground point, that I'd always seen....but never removed and inspected the cable and fastening point, since it is readily visible in its entirety. This cable is actually a short braided wire fastened on one end at the passenger side of the engine valve cover on one of the rearmost bolts. It is fastened on the other end up on the firewall on the passenger side. As stated, it’s relatively easy to see and both connection points are readily visible. It was a non-insulated grounding wire(mesh cable) that I could clearly see down its path between both connection points, so I'd always assumed if I could clearly see the cable and down it's path, there was no need to do any further examination....well my friends, never assume. I figured what the heck, let me just take the cable off and do a simple Ohms (resistance/continuity) check on it and do a quick look at the connection points, just to honestly say "I've checked every possible ground point". Well upon getting the first firewall connection point off I went to move the cable out of the way to look at the ground point and the Eureka moment happened......that damn cable disintegrated right in my hand at the point where it enters the crimped on ferrule that attaches to the firewall. Upon further inspection, you could see where some arcing had taken place even up inside the ferrule. I went ahead and took the other end off at the valve cover bolt mount location and it was literally hanging by a thread on the remaining mesh cable, and appeared to have done some arcing over time. I laid the remaining remnants of that cable upon my workbench and thought I'd just piece together the remaining cable together to see what continuity may have been left and as you might expect, virtually nothing...even after cleaning and reseating the ferrules with the good parts of the remaining cable. I went and got some 10AWG copper wire, installed new brass crimp on connectors on the ends(then melted some solder into the ferrule crimps) hooked it back up to the connection points on the firewall and valve cover locations(after thoroughly cleaning those as well). I went back in and started the vehicle, took off for a test drive and guess what.....all those damn symptoms previously listed had vanished! Moral of this story is....don't just look at ground points and their attaching wires/cables from just an outside look...remove them at their attachment points, pull on the attachment points for snugness, examine the connectors and clean those attachment points thoroughly back down to bare metal, brass, aluminum, etc. Oh yeah….another thing....do not put grease on the attachment points where they contact each other, as some might want you to believe. You're only impeding current flow. It is okay to put grease on the "OUTER" point of the cables exposed to the atmosphere to prevent moisture and/or salt intrusion.....but not on the inner points where you need direct steel to steel (brass to metal, aluminum to steel, etc.) Those of you who might see this as a potential post to help in another forum discussion, please post it to those as well, as that firewall grounding point controls grounding to so many different systems. Hope this helped a few folks out there!

Hi there, thanks for this great post! We're experiencing very similar problems with our JGC, same year. I've had a look at the engine to try and identify the braided wire that you mention but can't see it anywhere. We live in the UK and have the 2.7 CRD which is a Mercedes engine but the symptoms are exactly as you describe, speedo sticking at around 10-12 MPH and gear not shifting as it should, radio randomly not working properly, ABS light on.

Hello Elaine, I'm not too familiar with the 2.7 liter engine, but with the different symptoms you are experiencing it definitely sounds to be in the "grounding" realm. I'd look at all cables that go from the negative post on the battery, to where they attach to the points on the body or frame of your JGC. I'd actually take the cables off where they attach to the body or frame and look at the surface to ensure it has no corrosion of any kind and clean it thoroughly with a wire brush or Dremel tool with a good wire wheel attachment or grinding stone...be sure to remove the corrosion on both the electrical cable and the point on the body or frame where it mounts. There will also be other smaller cables that attach just between the body and frame...or the engine linked to the body or frame...these all must have their attaching bolts/screws removed so you can look at and/or clean and remove the corrosion from the terminal where they're contacting metal to metal. Anywhere electrons have to jump from one contact to another...even though the contacts are literally touching and squeezed together with a nut or bolt, you will have electrolytic corrosion...the only way to avoid it is to not have any moisture around and that's virtually impossible with automobile that operate in a moisture laden environment. Wishing you luck on the cable grounding points search and corrosion removal!

Hi again, thanks so much for taking the time to reply. We'll follow your advice and go from there. My partner also suspects the wheel speed sensors might be at fault so we'll check them out too. We're off to France towing a caravan in a few weeks so hope to have it sorted by then! Many thanks again, Elaine

You should check all your Grounding points under the hood...there should be one or more fairly close to the battery and a large one that connects from the negative battery terminal to the frame and then the body. When you get multiple issues like this at the same time, or in short succession of each other, you had better check all the ground points. Remove any and all bolts that hold the wires/cables to the frame or body from the negative side of the battery circuit and ensure they're not corroded underneath where the metal touches between each connection point....if you see Rust or anything that looks Green or Whitish, remove all of that down to the base metal and reattach. Best Wishes on getting those issues corrected....save yourself some $$$'s and check those ground points before taking it to a dealer or mechanics shop.

Guru72ZJF...are you having any other weird electronic issues going on?....either momentarily or steadily? If so, it's HIGHLY likely you have a ground connection that needs cleaned or removed and retightened to ensure there's good electrical flow through that ground point. Look up along the firewall under the hood and check the ground cable/wire that goes from the engine to the firewall or the frame to the firewall...remove the wires from their mount points and clean the corrosion where the wire mounts to the mount point and the mount point itself.

Dear Sir, first thank you for your kind response I have jeep grand Cherokee 2001 4.7 limited - 8 cylinders - 2WD I bout it since 2008 and till today . last year May 2019 my story start by whistle from back of the car ( fuel pump as per the mechanic guy said , but unfortunately after he change the fuel pump still the sound there, then I don't know what he did later own the sound gone i think he changed other one, and during that time issue he replace engine fan as engine heat, then the story coming up with speed kilometer up. all up solved but during this few month I have new issue coming up as mentioned below. symptoms Transmission shifting not well and sometime I have to press fuel paddle to increase the speed to shift from speed to other, and some time I press more to hit the speed meter to read the speed well. 2. I have erratic electrical some time with tail light behind the driver side, as its not working sometime at all and some time with running with car little return back normal. 3. sometime I found like the battery disconnected by seen the dashboard top of my head changed from kilometer to mile as I am using kilometer signs and this happen when I disconnect the battery only but this happen one time and I found battery plug lose. 4. sometime I feel the Ac speed going low-up. 5. hand break light either you close it or open it the red light on dashboard keep opened. My car now running more than 190.000 kilometer and last November I changed list below 1. Camshaft. 2. crankshaft. 3. 8 coils. 4. 8 spark plugs. 5. fuel filter. 6. Ac compressor, as the old not working well. 7. clean throttle body and changed sensors. hope really help me as I am facing this issue since 1 year now and am scare go back to mechanic shop as no experience. attached video shown the case ( speed meter ) However, there was one ground point, that I'd always seen....but never removed and inspected the cable and fastening point, since it is readily visible in its entirety. This cable is actually a short-braided wire fastened on one end at the passenger side of the engine valve cover on one of the rearmost bolts. ( Hope you can send me the video of this location so i can check by myself if required after you read all info up. Best regards Amer amer_77h@hotmail.com

I don't know how to load videos to this Carguru feedback commentary. It sounds exactly what was going on with my 2004 JGC Laredo a year or so ago. I was chasing all kinds of erratice electronic issues such as speedometer not working or jumping all over the place, the transmission not wanting to come out of 1st or 2nd gear, and the HVAC system would only work in "Defrost" mode...so scratching my head to say the least. After realizing so many issues were happening at the same time, I knew I had a Grounding issue. I think you have the same. I'd look at each and every Ground point that comes off your battery to the Frame or Body, then look under the hood everywhere you can to see where cables/wires are placed either on the firewall, fenders, radiator support, etc. and remove each and every one of those and clean off the corrosion under the point where it's mounted, and the ground point itself. Get up under your Jeep and look for any grounding points that may come off the transmission up to the Body or Frame and remove and clean those as well. If you can look back near your Fuel Tank and check for any Grounding points that may be corroded and remove and clean those too. It may be deceiving just looking at Grounding points externally with just your naked eye, as a lot of corrosion is going on under those connection points where the electrical voltage is traveling, which is causing the corrosion! Best Wishes and I'll keep the fingers crossed you find that bad Ground! Chad

Hey Great to here!! So many electrical issues on vehicles can be traced to bad ground points...either under the hood or somewhere along the body and frame. Best Regards to you!
