when I accelerate in my lifted Silverado I hear a chatering whistle howl noise when I give it gas. is this the pinion bearing or carear bearing?

Hard to say. If you jack up the truck you should be able to tell. The backlash gives some natural play between the ring and pinion. Try to turn the drive shaft and wheels, where ever it does move is your problem. Due to the crush sleeve pre-loading the pinion may be hard to move but you should be able to tell the difference between that and bearing damage.

I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado. In the past two years the truck has died, at random, while driving. This usually occurs when the gas is between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank. So I have been keeping the truck over half a tank. Though it was driving fine yesterday, this morning it began sputtering (heavily) when i accelerate and i can smell smoke. I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado extended cab, 4.8 liter. I have had multiple issues with this vehicle, but the one I can't seem to solve is this: if I leave the truck sitting for a day, when I get in and start driving, about 5 miles down the road, it acts like it is being starved of fuel. The engine light starts blinking and there is no power even when i step on the gas fully. After a minute or two, it goes away and runs fine unless I let it sit for a couple days. I just replaced my fuel lines because they were rusted out but that didn't solve the problem. Any ideas anyone? 5 answers
