When in reverse, rear wheel(s) suddenly lock up

Asked by GuruTTK6W Jun 20, 2018 at 11:59 AM about the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Sometimes in reverse, it seems the rear wheel(s)
lock up abruptly.  I put shift into neutral,  then into
reverse (automatic transmission) , truck backs up
a foot or 2, then rear wheel(s) lock up again. This
goes on forever, and then next time there is no
problem.  Truck goes forward always without
issue.  Truck is a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Z71 4 x 4, with 103,000 miles.

Are you sure the wheels are locking? I would be suspicious of the park pawl dropping into place due to a linkage adjustment. Is it a 4L60-E trans? (OBD 1)

I don't know what type of transmission my 1995 Chevrolet 1500 Silverado Z71 pick up has other than it is an automatic. Last year there was a leak in the brake line, which was fixed.

Any solution to this? I’m having the same issue with my 1997 C1500

The answer for the 1995 Silverado was the rear self adjusting brakes. Instead of adjusting, it was locking. Dealer fixed it along with some other things. It was about $600 at the small town dealer.

My 1996 Chevy Silverado k1500 locks up every once in a while in reverse you give it a little gas it won’t move but when you give it a lot the tires barely spin and it sounds like stuff is grinding and breaking. Any idea what the problem might be?

Had the same issue on my 2003 Chevy Malibu. Problem was the rear drum brake locking on one side. Parking brake is a peddle you push down to activate rear brakes and press again to release the brake. I applied just slight push on parking brake foot pedal and heard and felt the brake release. Will pull the rear brakes in the morning.
