My bronco is in pretty good shape,
but I woke up one day and it cuts
straight off after putting it in drive.. It
starts and runs in any other gear
except drive.. What could it be?

So if you put it in the D position it will die but if you run past the D into 2 or 1 it will drive froward?

First off have the codes read to see if there is a problem there, then check the gear selector switch, it could be sending the wrong signal to the ECM as this is a early computer controlled transmission.

At a shop?

Is this a major problem where I will have to get a new car? Or can it be fixed?

It sounds electrical to me, unless you are very mechanically inclined I would recommend taking it to a shop that you trust, it can get a little expensive labor wise. I sure it can be fixed.
