heater not blowing hot just cold air

i put a peice of card board in front of radiator and it started to blow warm air.  could there b   
no thermostat in engine

There probably is a thermostat, unless someone removed. They wont magically disappear. More than likely with this car you are low on coolant. Water pump may be leaking, radiator may be leaking. Water pumps have been known to leak on the 2J motors.
