without taking the engine out of the
1985 Camaro v6 2.8l 5 speed. The
previous owner said he blew the
engine when he down shifted to
prevent a collision. That's when it
blew. How can I know for sure that I
need a new engine or just New gears
or transmission.  What should I look
for ?

Look for a high oil level that is milky looking. Try to crank the engine over to see if it is free. Run a compression test. See if it will start and if it has oil pressure.

possible timing. Pull the distributor cap and roll the engine. Rotor should turn with it.
