Merc-O-Matic transmission

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1957 Mercury Montclair.  It originally called for Type A transmission fluid.  I think Ford changed to Type F in the early 60s.  Can anyone tell me what currently used transmission fluid would be best for this car?
thanks

Yes, my 65 montclair mercomatic MX was near ruined by type F. Dextron did not do it either. did not shift good at all. Put a half can of berrymans in it just so it would shift again I still do not know why the secret of what fluid it came with other than perminant fluid they said but other than this number, No info. R106A M-2C33-D numbers found in the owners manual and the shop manual. So Type A is my last hope. Thank you very much for this info. Paul

I found it. Valvoline VV3246 full synthetic works perfectly. Shifts just like new, for the Merco-matic Mx
