Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Got motor in, tried to fire it
up, back fired a couple
times, never got it to find up,
has spark, fuel, fuel
pressure, pretty sure timing
is right I triple checked it,
plugs are in correct order,
kinda stumped now, only
thing I can think of is the
aftermarket cam is throwing
everything off.

If you have spark, compression and fuel and the timing is right then it should run. If you can get another set of eyes on it they might find what you missed. I would start from square one. Put the engine on TDC and check to see if the timing is close and that the rotor in the distributor is pointing to the number one wire. Verify every step. The cam timing is another thing but you can check to see if the valves are closed at TDC #1 cylinder. If so it should be close. To check it further though would mean removing the timing chain cover if this is a single cam V8.
