does any one know what to look for in trying to fix a feul gauge on a 1979 chevy c20 pickup?

if you are getting an off reading, its most likely the sensor in the fuel tank. if it is not reading at all its the guage itself.
Check the ground wire. I had the same issue with my old '79 Monte Carlo with the feul gauge not working turned out to be just a bad ground wire once fixed the fuel gauge worked fine.
dont know what your gauge is doing wrong but , first check ground from sender it on top of frame near fuel tank (not very easy to get to) they get rusty over the years. they operate on resistance 90ohms ful to empty if you want to measure it from sender
if the guage is always reading Full the ground is bad or broken, if it is jumping from full to anywhere the wire is about to break, replace the ground wire and things should go back to normal
