Spiking temp guage

I have a 2000 Chevy  Astro van. When
van gets to operating temp. The
coolant t gauge spikes to red then
returns to normal temp. The problem
is intermittent.  The engine is not
overheating g and heater n ac work
properly.

I think your gauge is not working correctly, they make inline temp gauges that can be installed into the system. I also think they make a strap on temp gauge that you can install on the hoses. This will allow you to monitor the system temp.
