Will a 1997 ford winstar alternator work in 1998 ford windstar

I looked at the parts online and for the '97 and '98 the alternators for the 3.0l are the same, and the 3.8l are the same. However an alternator from a 3.0 won't fit a 3.8 and vise versa......
