How to take shifter out of 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4--replacing transmission

you did not specify automatic or manual shift, let's go with manual, most assuredly will be a cup-point setscrew at the base of the shifter, closest to the transmission. For automatic transmissions, you must remove and plug/cap the coolant lines, take the bolts out of the bell housing, disconnect the sensors, back light switch and any vacuum modulators that are there, the french locks on the driveshaft bolts and the u-bolt and the u-joints- need more~
