how does a car burn oil

Typically either from leaking valve seals or piston blow by.
My 525xi is burning oil. Also the engine now makes
more noise than when I bought it, now It has 107k
miles I use 5w30 oil. Should I use a thinker oil?

Have a burning oil problem on a 2004 Subaru WRX
wagon. Seems to burn at idle and when I push the
car. Looses 1qt of oil every 1000 miles. Smells like
it's running rich and burning oil.
