I don´t think it will replace gas/diesel since it doesn´t explode. It could use a system such as the engine in the air-powered Tata vehicle but then air is lighter and doesn´t need to be stored, making water useless. Besides we will be running out of water if every car gets a water engine.

Water is used to produce hydrogen through electrolysis. That hydrogen in turn can power the car. Considering the Earth surface is about 70% water and it is renewable it would be unlikely that it would run out.

What Larry said, and google it, some universities have been developing tech, which makes cars run on water.

long answer no short answer kinda. The problem of using water as a fuel source stems from the requirement to release the hydrogen from the oxygen it is bonded to. This takes a large electrical current and as a result we would need a power source to do this.

i recall 4 or 5 years ago bmw developed a (i wanna say) an 8 series w/400+ hp. 100% hydrogen powered sports car. so the technology has been perfected by certain autombile companies. the problem is with "the powers that be" AKA oil moguls, that manipulate the oil industry such as OPEC and run this country of ours behind the scenes. they are going to make it EXTREMELY difficult (if not impossble) for this kind of technology to be implemented in the future. for ex. ask yourself this: why is it that despite the economic turmoil that the country is in, where EVERYTHING in every industry has dropped prices and STILL gas prices haven't made a reasonable drop off in prices, yet the barrel of oil is fluxuating around $50.00 -$60.00 (which last i recalled translated into $2-$2.15 p/gallon at the pump? this is the dilemma that we face and are forced to swallow as a consumer and as a country

Amen @steve ! OPEC killed GM's EV-1. GM had to totally restart on the volt. I think we could even see a steam engine. @ken water is far from useless.

As soon as cars run on water the goverment will find a way to tax every drop even rain ! We already pay for tap and bottled water. Just imagine the smile on the face of a politician taxing rain ?
