Can you tell me what this is?

hi, so I know this part should have a cap on it (astra h) but
this rod won't go down for me to put it back on... any tips or
causes of this? What even is this part of the car called??

Note this isn't my car

That is your strut mount and that "rod" sticking out is the top of the strut, you need to get that repaired or replaced.

Thanks. As I say, its not my car but someone asked what it was and id no idea... they've had a quote and it's not a cheap repair

What is cheap these days? Your friend will be replacing the struts and the mounts, plus an alignment.
