So I have a 2002 Oldsmobile silhouette. It’s over heating. I notice radiator fan is not working during that time?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a van and it is overheating when I
notice the radiator fan is not working. But
sometimes it decides it wants to work. And
when the radiator fan works the van seems to
run okay?  I’m just worried this will be a
bigger problem then I expect.

You might have a bad engine coolant temperature sensor, that governs when the fan should come on. Or you may have corroded wiring causing it to run intermittently. You seem to have discovered why the van is overheating (no cooling fan), you just have to do a little troubleshooting to determine why it's not coming on.

Another thought, maybe the fan brushes are worn out? If so, the fan may run intermittently. If that is the case, you need a new fan motor. Just a thought.

Thank you both so much I’m going to a mechanic in monday to see if it’s just the fan.
