Jeeps have problems with wheel speed sensors and the related connectors, so do the easy stuff first, disconnect the sensors and clean the contacts on both sides then reset and test drive the vehicle if the light returns then you will need to run diagnostics on the sensors.

When a car's computer sees a significant problem, it turn on the CEL. Next, it disables functions like ABS, traction, stability, and cruise control. You need to have codes read to find where the problem is. It could be as simple as a lose gas cap.

If the ABS light comes on when you start the engine and stays on it's going to be a wheel speed sensor or the wiring going to the sensor. If you start the engine and the ABS light comes on, goes off after a few seconds, then comes back on when you start moving it's the pump and modulator assembly. The ABS performs a self diagnosis when you start the engine. This doesn't include the pump and modulator assembly. Only the wheel speed sensors and ABS computer are checked. Once the vehicle begins moving the computer tests the pump and modulator assembly. If that test fails, the ABS light comes back on. The ABS computer is cleared each time you shut off the engine. So if the light isn't on when the shop scans the ABS computer, no codes will be in there. Hope that helps! Jim

The prices I'm looking at are way out of my budget.

Yeah today’s shop prices are out of almost everyone’s budget. If you don’t have a high tech vehicle and are really up against it then look for a retired tech that is just doing it to help people but not running a shop. Of course there will be drawbacks like no guarantee on work done, no parts warranty, etc.

See if your local auto parts store can scan the ABS computer. If they can it'll probably be free. Then you can go from there. Good luck to you and I hope that helps! Jim
