whats are the holes in my heads?

i have a 1983 chevy silverado. usure if its a 305 or 350 but between each
valve/rocker arm their is a square hole that appears to go in the block! i have
no clue what it is but their is debree from mice. what is the holes and how do i
clean them?

Try a shop vacuum, but it might require disassembly to clean it up. Was this engine sitting somewhere with the valve covers off or not sealed?
The square holes are the oil drain passages that send excessive oil from the cylinder head back to the oil pan. Mouse debris there is not good. Also be very careful around mouse debris. If it is fresh you could possible contract Hantavirus if the mice were deer mice. Hantavirus kills about 1/2 of the unfortunate people that contract it. When cleaning this mess up use a respirator mask and spay the mouse mess with a mixture of bleach and water. I use about 1 part bleach to 3 parts water. This will not only keep the dust down, but will kill the virus. Do a Google search for Hantavirus.
The engine will very likely need to torn down and cleaned at the very least.
