Same as when you have a question about a medical issue. Get a second opinion. The transmission fluid does warm up via the lines to and from the radiator. --- It could also be a a result of low voltage. Check the battery voltage with the engine running. It should be around 14-14.5 volts.

right, and did the mechanic check the fluid level of the transmission? The 1999-02 Volvo's were notorious for bad transmissions, so. But listen to tenspeed and get a second opinion, I personally rather rebuild a trans than replace.
