Should I buy a used Cherokee from late 90s, early 90s

I'm looking to buy a car for a move from NJ to TX and then to have as an
everyday car in Austin, TX.  For Cherokees from about 96-2005, are they
reliable?  Repairs expensive?  Mileage okay?  I've been doing research and
I've seen both opinions.
