why is gas getting in the oil

Thats a gasket or the engine was flooded at some point. Is it the 3.4?

A leaky injector can allow gas to flood one or more cylinders. When you crank the engine all that excess gas is forced past the rings into the crankcase. Check the fuel pressure and pressure regulator as well.
