Not sure about a 4x4 setup or if possible, but I put a 5.0 in my rwd 89 ranger I drove my jr year in high school. Was not hard with a 2wd! 4wd has quite a bit more involved in the swap.

im not sure what kind of engine they have in the later models if its a the same mounting style as the v6 mustang id just do the 4.6 swap do the cobra engine. because i know the mustangs k-members in those years were quite a bit different and caused oil pan clearance issues. therefore ud have to change the k-member not to hard but even more money. i'd look into it before u tear into it. because if it does turn out u have the same mounting style as the the mustang then it might just be worth ur while to go to a scrap yard and buy a gt 4.6 or cobra 4.6L engine. do a rebuild and slap it in. if not go for a 351 same as a 302 same size block and heads just more displacement. but i have no idea i helped a friend of mine put a 302 in a 87 ran like a striped ass ape was alot easier then a 1st gen 350 in a 96 S10. lol.
