Truck Stop Running

Asked by Apr 27, 2014 at 06:44 PM about the Ford F-250

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1989 F250 5.8l. Drove truck yesterday after not driving it over a week. It just cut out and wouldnt crank back up. I let it sit for
about 10 mins then it cranked back up and ran just fine. Today driving down the road it cut out again and let it set 10 mins and it
cranked up just fine again and drove about 500 yards, it cut back off. Had it towed back to house. It has been 6 hrs since it
happened and truck still not cranking up. It turns over fine. Engine, Check Engine and Battery light came on. The oil pressure,
temp, battery gauges all read normal.

I changed the fuel filter, i checked to see if water was in the lines and there was not. i took a plug wire up and put a flat head screw driver bit in the spark cap and put it up next to fire wall and there was not a arc. i then took the main wire from the box to the distributor and put the screw bit in it and put it up to firewall and still no arc. so it the box there that is messed up?

would it either be the coil pack or the ignition module

I guess nobody knows? is there a way to test the two to see if that is the issue?

Well I got the ignition module off and it was bad so replaced it. The truck cranks up and runs now. But now truck has no power under load.

didnt get any help from here. but issue is fixed. i had to replace the whole distributor if anyone else has this issue. now i just have to get the timing dialed in closer then what it is. it is idling around 1k.

Thanks for sharing, Rick. I googled a similar issue with my 1992 f250 that has us miffed. After full tune up and trying 2 different computers we are stumped and looking to the fuel pump and lines. Will look at distributor thanks to your posts.

i replaced fuelpump, fuel filter, pickup, coil, distributor, map sensor, and it still cuts off. i can not figure it out.. the only thing i need to check now is the ignition module, and replay contact i hope something will correct the problem
