i found a javelin with, what i believe is designer seats from the factory. was this a factory option?

You did not give many details (year etc)...AMC Had a Pierre Cardin AMX with Designer Interior...Not sure if this was also a Javelin option...They also made a Levi's interior option on Javelin Gremlin and Hornet...Also there was a Barcelona interior option in the Matador...May have been more I am not aware of...

Certainly did. Check out www.cardinjavelin.com for the history and details on the Cardin version Javelin and AMX's from 1972 & 1973.

We have a 1971 or 72 Javlin coup, bucket seats, 4 speed, 390, positraction, harness belts in front and back seats. The speedometer reads at 180 MPH. What do we have?
