My engine died while driving down the express way. Tried to restart/j it but just cranked. Got a tow next day just rapid clicking from starter solenoid. Battery@ 11.8 volts, fuel ok..what caused this?

Sounds like a failed fuel pump to me although it could definitely be other things, but I'd start there.
